On the present-day site where the Montage Deer Valley now stands, the Daly West mine once operated in the late 1800s. At that time a huge wood headframe originally served it. A replacement steel headframe was then built in 1914 following a large fire at the mine. The Daly West Headframe is over a century old, eighty-five feet tall, and weighs 80,000 pounds. In May of 2015, the historic headframe collapsed due to a cave-in, but was raised and restored in July 2022. The headframe is nestled in between the Montage Deer Valley hotel and the Empire Express chairlift. While it was once popular to climb the structure, going up the headframe is now enclosed in order to preserve it for future generations.
